  5. University, last week decried the poor quality of America's public
  6. schools. An excerpt: "Now, in the midst of the explosion of
  7. information, knowledge and complex challenges facing us, the
  8. American university cannot afford the luxury of transforming its
  9. first two years of instruction to meet the woeful inadequacies of
  10. our public school system. We cannot afford to relegate 50% of the
  11. university's time and resources to remedial work . . . The
  12. universities in two years cannot do justice to twelve years of
  13. neglect in learning. We are our high schools' keepers. The nation
  14. must take preventive measures to reform, strengthen and in some
  15. instances rescue our high school system."
